Chapter Five

On Saturday, Layla slept in and went out for some exercise afterward. She ran until her chest was heaving and her lungs burned and only stopped when her mobile phone vibrated in her pocket. Pulling it out, she saw the photo of her and Treyton laughing together, which indicated that he was calling. He was traveling with his father for work, and she hadn’t expected him to call so early, but her heart raced at the thought of hearing his voice.

“Hi, baby,” Layla said, trying to catch her breath. She could feel her heart pounding in her ears.

“Why is your breathing so ragged? Are you okay?” Treyton asked in alarm.

“Yes, I am fine,” she assured him. “I was running. I thought you would still be with your father. Is everything well with you?” He sounded a bit strange.

“Yeah, I am fine, but I need to talk to you. We left San Francisco yesterday evening and drove all night to get home. How soon can you get here, Layla?” he asked.

Layla wanted to ask him why they had driven and not flown but thought it could wait. Instead, she uttered, “Sweetheart, tell me what is going on. You are worrying me.” Anxiety began to creep along her spine.

“I am fine. It’s just that something happened, and it involves you, too. My parents are waiting to talk to us. Come to the house, and I will explain everything,” Treyton urged.

She hesitated. “Can’t you tell me what it is about?”

“Layla, sweetheart, it will be okay. I will tell you what you need to know in person. I promise. Please, love, just come to the house as soon as possible. I need you.”

Treyton needed to say nothing more. Layla replied, “I will be there soon.”

After running back to the house and taking a quick shower, Layla dressed in fresh clothes, a pair of faded blue skinny jeans, a white tank, and a white, cashmere cardigan. Then, she slipped into a pair of Converse tennis shoes and weaved her hair into a messy braid. Grabbing the keys from the kitchen counter, she ran for her car and drove across town.

When Layla arrived, she could see Treyton waiting outside for her, pacing the driveway. She jumped from the car after pulling up and jumped into his waiting arms. He returned the affection by hugging and kissing her deeply.

Once they separated, Treyton said, “Thank you for getting here so fast, babe. Dad and Mom are waiting for us in the main house.” He took her hand, and they walked up the drive together.

When they walked into the family sitting room where his parents were, Kitty St. James rose to take Layla’s hands.

“Thank you for coming, dear. We did not mean to worry you, but we need to discuss a problem that involves both of you,” Treyton’s mother uttered while leading Layla to a loveseat across from the couch on which her husband was sitting, sipping a drink. When she sat down, Treyton took the seat next to her.
